This is the third book by Salomé Voegelin who is one of the most important voices in the field of Sound Art and she has been an essential part of Sound Reasons over the years. Her writings are both original and challenging and they have to perceived with a continuous engagement over a period of time just like the medium of Sound itself. She has handled the immensely complicated sphere of Sound Art in its contemporary format in a very poetic manner, and along the way has devised an original language and a strong discourse that truly reflects the medium. The ‘Political Possibility of Sound’ like both of her previous works is a multi-layered read and it (re) builds on the sonic perception and engagement as a practice of reading and in-turn listening

Text on the Event
The essay is the perfect format for a crisis. Its porous and contingent nature forgives a lack of formality, while its neglect of perfection and virtuosity releases the potential for the incomplete and the unrealizable. These seven essays on The Political Possibility of Sound present a perfectly incomplete form for a discussion on the possibility of the political that includes creativity and invention, and articulates a politics that imagines transformation and the desire to embrace a connected and collaborative world.

Seven artists, authors, theorists and practitioners will respond and engage each with one of the seven essays that form the book, expanding and challenging the writing beyond its pages into the imagination of the listener. Nina Power teaches Philosophy at the University of Roehampton and is the author of many articles on politics, philosophy and culture. Angus Carlyle’s research responds to inhabited environments through film, soundworks and textual practices, shifting between collaborative and solitary endeavours, the documentary and the poetic.

Thomas Gardner is a cellist, musician and sound artist. His current work considers the ways in which the post-war ruptures of art-music, as exemplified by the Darmstadt school, are met by an increasingly political understanding of sound art. Aura Satz’s practice encompasses film, sound, performance and sculpture. She has performed, exhibited and screened her work nationally and internationally. She is Reader and Tutor at the RCA (Royal College of Art).

Mikhail Karikis’ work embraces moving image, sound and other media to create immersive audiovisual installations that emerge from his long-standing interest in the voice as a material and a socio-political agent. Kevin Logan is a cross-disciplinary artist/researcher/teacher based in London. His work foregrounds sonic practice using a speculative blending of writing, performance, moving-image, and installation.

“Everything is burning”

Raqs Media Collective returns to Project 88, Mumbai with Provisions, an exhibition that brings together the premiere in India of an ambitious recent video travelogue, Provisions for Everybody (2018), as well as a new body of work — photo/text/objects that embody an agile and playful skepticism towards the civilisational burden of the unequal distributions of toxicity.

“How not to write slow poisoning love letters to life?”, Raqs ask, as they straddle a planet rotating without permission, create a road map for the centuries from stone, coal, oil and windmills, while following an itinerary between epochs and continents, on and off the trail of George Orwell.

Raqs burrow under the earth, find a memorial to doubt next to sugarcane fields, survey an open cast coal mine, study line-dancing in a pit village, and find everything ablaze from the neolithic age to now. This provokes reflection on the relationship between time and energy, between burning and becoming fuel.

The task Raqs give themselves is one of ambition and simplicity: how to re-imagine the relation between the toxic and the true, between potential and plenitude.

6 Channel Spatial Sound Installation

These are a set of two sound installations based on spatial listening processes. Here, the sound develops spatially and its discovery unfolds itself in the present, bringing with it the experiences of sound and listening as an immersive spatial sculpture. The audience is encouraged to navigate the sonic space in order to get a heterogeneous perception of sound, time and space created within the installation. This work also juxtaposes a subjective rhythmic layer which spatially evokes the loose and almost organic rhythm of ‘folk music’ from india. When paying close attention the listener can pick up on two, and sometimes three rhythms, these can be heard slightly flowing in and out of synchronicity within the installation space.

These installations are about listening and its subjective nature. They are a sonic heterotopia in which various experiences are created which are both imagination and reality. Sound, here, is created in the listening of it while its invention is in the imagination of the listener. The sound outlines the creative interplay between the objectivity of the sonic phenomenon created and the subjectivity of the perceptions filtered through individual experience. Imaginary spaces and narratives can be drawn to trace individual experiences of listening to the sonic works installed from various points in within the installations. These non-locational perspectives, in turn, initiate deeper immersive listening experiences while drawing attention to the finer points of sound, its movements, its progress through spacial form.

ISh S Composer, Sound Artist
Ish Shehrawat (Ish S) is a composer, sound artist and musician from New Delhi/ India. His primary field of interests are ‘Sound Art and Installation’ along with ‘electro-acoustic music’ and he has been presenting some of his works as Sound Installations and mixed media works. He is also an electronic musician and has trained as classical guitar player. Producing these creative works under different pseudonyms and projects like – edGeCut, diFfused beats, Khayali pulao and 4th World Orchestra, he creates, collaborates and produces a wide spectrum of music and sounds ranging from Jazz to classical and from ambient to experimental electronic music and has developed his own style over a period of time. Ish has produced various sound art installations, albums and composed music for independent short films, plays, performances and Contemporary Dance Recitals

In 2009 he founded the music label called ‘Sound Reasons’ to promote contemporary and electronic music and have released a number of albums since then. Ish also curates the ‘Sound Reasons Festival’ for sound art and experimental electronic music which takes place in India and the South Asia region in the month of November. Having collaborated with many international artists, Ish has performed live and some of his works have been presented and installed around the world at the M Bar – BeatWave Festival, Helsinki | Queen Elizabeth Hall, London | ‘World Information City conference’, Bangalore , India | Electron festival, Geneva | Art Basel | Estonia | Goethe Institut, India | Electrogonner, Vienna | F+F Schule fur Kunst und Medien Design, Zurich | Inter Art Center Malmo, Sweden | Mahem, Copenhagen| Blue Frog, Mumbai | London College of Communication | The British Council and other venues across the world. edGeCut is an electro-acoustic music project by Ish (Sound Reasons) with influences from Indian and western classical, blues and jazz, and approached with an unique electro understanding. These styles are fused together on a bed of contemporary electronica which is used as the primary vehicle for composition. The live set reflects a mix of dub, breaks, drum and bass and psychedelic with sounds borrowed from jazz, Indian classical and electronic music. The live set is based around the aspects of improvisation in electronic music as well as instrumental music. This in-turn reflects the vast array of influences of the compositions that ranges Jazz to modal and classical music with a very new approach to electronic sounds. Ish has another project called diFfuSed beats with Konrad Bayer and is collaborating with Bass Clarinet Player Hand Koch on a new EP. He also manages and Curates Sound Reasons which is a Record Label and a Festival.

diFfuSed beats is a duo comprising of Konrad Bayer (Munich) and Ish Shehrawat (Delhi) as they engage with sound with both philosophical and de-constructive aesthetics. Their works are synthesized out of sounds, noises and field recordings that were recorded in various locations around the world. They are also performing their material over 6-8 speakers(channels, when available) to give a spatial performance, here the audience is surrounded by speakers as they are usually are seated in the middle to give them an immersive experience of their sounds and music. diFfuSed beats use a lot of electronic synthesis along with the filed recordings where by re-arranging, re-contextualizing, re-constructing and re-interpreting the sonic material an acoustic topography of the places along with the hidden spaces that constitute the subjective observant self emerges. They try to engage with sound as a philosophical and social reverberant and not just as an aesthetic object. Both sound and electronic music are the main elements in their works and as they pursue it with an expressionist angle in order to reflect on the times we live in.

Compiled by Ish S, this compilation has some of the most influential artists in the field of contemporary sound art and electronic music. Featured on the CD are 2 tracks from a live recording session which took place during the Sound Reasons Festival II in Delhi in November 2013. Here, Andy Guhl who is a pioneer of cracked and bent electronics, Jasch (Jan Schaner) and Ish S (edGeCut + diFfuSed beats) made three recording sessions together and two parts of these recording sessions called ‘vertex y,z’ and ‘point l,m’ are featured on this CD. These 2 tracks represent the spirit of free improvisation and creative flow driven equally driven by the process listening and observing as they are by the process of creation of these sounds itself. These recording sessions will be published in their entirety on Sound Reasons towards the end of 2014. The opening tune of the CD called ‘A’ composed by n0ngrata(Samar Grewal) + edGeCut (Ish S) was a collaboration especially shaped together for this compilation as it paints this ambient picture filled with mild glitches and pushes the envelop of harmony with a few interesting movements of fourths and sixths juxtaposed with some eventual dissonances. The compilation features a wide array of diverse artists like Gennady Lavrentiev and Cisfinitum (Eugeny Voronovsky ) who together hail from Moscow and their sound and creativity spans the contemporary and dark ambient. Lavrentiev’s track ‘rage in Jhaptaal’ is an interesting electro track set to an unusual 10 beat cycle and has a funny yet completely original nod to Frank Zappa and John Zorn. Cisfinitum’s work reflects an interesting dark ambient territory which evolves itself while it progresses into various interesting sonic states.

Salomé Voegelin who is a Swiss Writer and Sound Artist based in London and has written an outstanding book on contemporary Sound Art and Practice called ‘Listening to Noise and Silence’ has contributed a track called ‘exactly three minutes’ which is built around music concrete aesthetics. Here the focus is on the small and the slight – everyday material performed, recorded, and manipulated to become noticeable events that remain unimportant but attain a rhythm. These are moments that pass you by unless they are amplified and restaged in a composition: produced as unseen performances that almost fail to happen, that lack a performer and maybe even an audience and yet they sound.These sounds when have a the power to transform the listener and position him/her right into the centre of it, hence becoming very powerful sonically. The talented German artist Grischa Lichtenberger who has a highly individualistic attack and style lets his anachronistic interest in landscape reflect on his track called ‘Let c targ’ has a beautiful space . As one of the youngest artists to be featured on Raster-Noton he has already paved an interesting creative path and is constantly in a state of Flux via which he is directing and redirecting his approach constantly as this tune represents his new sound which he presented at the Sound Reasons festival. (http://soundreasons.in/videos). The background vocals on the track ‘let C targ’ derives its samples from a sufi concert recorded at Mehboobe Elahi (a famous sufi shrine in the heart of New Delhi). Fascinated by the repetitive, yet very narrative structure of the sufi’s music the track seeks to combine the futuristic impressions of a fragmented and disturbed reality with the vocal story telling of sufi music culture.

The collaboration between the Swiss Bass Clarinet player Hans Koch and Ish S from Delhi/ India has been built around abstract structures and experimental electronic synthesis. While being a study of generative rhythms it gives the listener a taste of the new EP which is under production by the Duo. One can also sample the virtuoso technique of Hans Koch on the reed on the track named ‘etude no 11′ as he efficiently demonstrates his circular breathing technique on he Bass Clarinet with eventual additions pulsating rhythmic variations as the track progresses. Robert Mills’ work “Gauhar” was put together using short, processed, and collaged samples from early acoustic 78rpm recordings, c. 1902-1920, especially recordings of Gauhar Jan, who is considered one of the first “gramophone celebrities” of India. edGeCut’s (Ish s) track ‘patterns in Fractals’ again has a lot of his trade mark glitch and compound rhythms which he is trying to explore for the last few years. The sharp contrast of electronica and melody which lends itself to dissonance through carefully manipulated patterns forms the basis for the rhythm and eventually moulding a structure for the perceived melody by the listener. Eisentanz’s work has some bold rhythm structures carefully contrasted with an evocatively clockwork industrial meter which is juxtaposed along with an array of ambient sounds. This track eventually transforms itself into another realm when choir voices appears towards the end of the track. da Saz’s track ‘Modular Geometry’ is composed using analog gear and it weaves together an interesting bouquet of floating ambient sounds and noises.

Finish Sound Artist’s Petri Kuljuntausta’s track ‘Aanien Jaljet’ takes us into the experimental territory of the ambient where the fine interplay of tension and sustain reigns supreme. Budhaditya Chattopadhyay picks up with the same intent of digital synthesis where his work intervenes into and redefines the ecologies of listening by making hidden sound elements audible to the ear, and in the process triggers the city-dweller’s imagination and awareness of an innate and pervasive sound-field present even in a presumably silent empty-space within the tangible environment of the city. Robin Meier’s tune which tracks Katia’s Dream is actually a binaural composition which uses an interesting mix of ambient samples and electronic synthesis to construct an aural dreamscape. In order to experience this track just like the intricate parts of the rest of the CD you have to listen to it on good Headphones to get the binaural effect. diFfuSed beats (Konrad Bayer + ISh S) track ‘A study of balance’ explores newer territories of sounds and rhythms while using a lot of ambient samples, with a playful exchange between music concrete and deconstructed elements of EDM. These elements are finally augmented together in their own unique way to shape the diFfuSed beats sound. Their debut album can be found at https://diffusedbeats.bandcamp.com. Masta Justy’s (Jatin Vidyarthi) tune ‘X’ is built on the drum and bass idiom and has an interesting mix of sonic activity to keep the keen ear involved through its unique array of ambient elements and sonic textures.
